Stretch Marks (Striae) Treatment in Indore

Stretch marks, medically called striae distensae, are linear scars in the dermis that form when skin is stretched faster than its collagen and elastin can adapt. They are extremely common, entirely harmless, and yet a source of real distress. The single most important fact about treating them is one that most people learn too late: red or purple stretch marks respond well to treatment, and white ones respond only partially. Timing determines the result more than any device does.

Red vs White: Why the Colour Matters

1. Striae rubrae (red or purple): The early, active phase, lasting roughly the first 6 to 12 months. The dermis is still inflamed and vascular, collagen remodelling is ongoing, and treatment can meaningfully alter the outcome. This is the window in which results are best.
2. Striae albae (white or silvery): The mature phase. The scar has settled, blood vessels have regressed and pigment cells are absent, leaving a depressed white band. Treatment can improve texture and reduce visibility, but complete removal is not realistic and no honest clinic will promise it.

Causes of Stretch Marks

1. Pregnancy: Affecting a large majority of women, typically on the abdomen, breasts and thighs.
2. Rapid growth spurts: Common in adolescence on the thighs, back and shoulders.
3. Rapid weight gain or loss and rapid muscle gain in bodybuilders.
4. Steroids: Prolonged topical, oral or inhaled corticosteroids, and anabolic steroid use.
5. Endocrine conditions: Cushing’s syndrome and Marfan syndrome.
6. Genetics: Family history is one of the strongest predictors of who develops them.

Symptoms and Appearance

1. Linear bands running perpendicular to the direction of skin tension
2. Initially red, pink or purple, sometimes slightly raised
3. Itching or a burning sensation in the early phase
4. Gradually fading to white, silvery and slightly depressed
5. Common sites: abdomen, breasts, thighs, buttocks, upper arms and lower back

When to See a Doctor

Come in as soon as stretch marks appear, while they are still red, because that is when treatment works best. Medical assessment is also warranted if stretch marks appear without an obvious cause such as pregnancy or weight change, are unusually wide and purple, or are accompanied by weight gain around the trunk and face, as this pattern can indicate Cushing’s syndrome.

Treatment for Stretch Marks

1. Topical therapy (early phase): Tretinoin, centella asiatica and hyaluronic acid preparations, which have reasonable evidence in red striae and none in white ones.
2. Fractional CO2 laser: The mainstay for both phases. Creates controlled microscopic injury that stimulates new collagen and remodels the scar, improving texture and colour over 3 to 5 sessions.
3. Microneedling with radiofrequency: Stimulates dermal collagen with less downtime and is well suited to darker Indian skin types, which carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation with aggressive laser settings.
4. PRP and growth factor therapy: Combined with microneedling to enhance collagen response.
5. Vascular laser: Specifically targets the redness of early striae.
6. Chemical peels and RF skin tightening: Adjuncts for surface texture and mild laxity.
7. Surgical excision: Only where stretch marks lie within loose lower abdominal skin being removed during an abdominoplasty.

What Happens If You Delay Treatment

Nothing dangerous happens, but the achievable result quietly diminishes. Every month a red stretch mark is left untreated it moves closer to the white, mature phase, where the vascular and cellular activity that treatment relies on has largely gone. Patients treated in the red phase frequently achieve near-complete resolution; the same patient treated three years later achieves meaningful but partial improvement over more sessions. If you have stretch marks that are still red, that is the time to act.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can stretch marks be removed completely?

Red stretch marks can improve dramatically and sometimes resolve almost completely. White ones improve in texture and visibility but cannot be erased entirely.

Do creams and oils work?

Some topical agents help in the early red phase. No cream has been shown to remove established white stretch marks.

How many sessions are needed?

Typically 3 to 5 laser or microneedling sessions spaced about a month apart, with results continuing to improve for several months afterwards.

Is laser safe for Indian skin?

Yes, with appropriate settings. Darker skin types carry a higher risk of post-treatment pigmentation, so conservative parameters and pre-treatment preparation are used.

Can I have treatment while breastfeeding?

Laser and microneedling are generally safe, but topical retinoids are avoided. Discuss timing at your consultation.

Can stretch marks be prevented?

Gradual weight change, good hydration and regular moisturising help, but genetics is the strongest factor and prevention is only partially achievable.
