Inguinal hernias are one of the most common types of hernias and occur in the groin area. This page will provide detailed information about inguinal hernias, their causes, symptoms, and treatment options. We will also highlight the expertise of Dr. Nilesh Dehariya, a leading hernia surgeon in Indore, with more than 20 years of experience.
An inguinal hernia occurs when a portion of the intestine or fatty tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, specifically in the inguinal canal located in the groin area. This type of hernia is more common in men than women.
You should seek medical attention if you notice a bulge in your groin or experience pain or discomfort in the area. Inguinal hernias do not improve on their own and can lead to complications if untreated.
If you put off treating an inguinal hernia, the weakness in your groin wall doesn’t stay the same — it usually gets worse. Over time, everyday activities like lifting, coughing, or bending may increase the size of the bulge and make the discomfort more frequent. What began as a small lump or mild tugging may grow into constant pressure or pain.
As the hernia enlarges, there’s a higher chance that intestine or fatty tissue may slip through into the hernia sac and become trapped (incarcerated). If that happens and the blood supply gets cut off (strangulation), it can lead to severe pain, intestinal blockage, or tissue death — requiring emergency surgery. Early repair gives you the best chance at restoring normal anatomy and avoiding serious complications.
